In
his lifetime, Captain Charlie Beer has caught more bluewater
gamefish than he will ever carve. And therein lies his
remarkable ability to capture the spirit and personality
of the great gamefish of the Atlantic.
Born
in and raised in the town of Beach Haven, on Long Beach
Island, N.J., the son of a fisherman and boat captain,
Charlie started out as most - working the bay in the
winter and in the summer practically living in the cockpit
of his father's charter fishing boat. His love for the
water, the challenge of fighting the big gamefish, and
the peacefulness of the ocean grew with each passing
day.
Charlie
took after his father and became the captain of a fishing
boat. Over the years, he traveled near and far to fish
the bluewater gamefish.
Trips
to Ecuador in South America, Newfoundland, Canada and
the Baja peninsula in California were both exciting
and successful. Fishing
for both business and pleasure, Charlie hunted all the
big game - tuna, black, white and blue marlin, sailfish,
and dolphin. He participated in many tournaments as
either a captain, a fisherman or a judge.
Charlie
took a little career detour from fishing to provide
for and raise his family. He still fished but only for
pleasure on occasion. During this time, he built the
houses his family lived in and started a profitable
cable TV business with a partner.
Upon
retirement, Charlie got involved with his second love,
woodworking. His first major project was to build a
sport fishing boat. He purchased a hull from a manufacturer
and then proceeded to built the boat from the inside
out.
Nowadays,
Charlie fills his days with what he loves most - carving.
You won't read about him in Gray's Sporting Journal
and you won't find his work in any fancy gallery. The
award ribbons his carvings have earned him are stacked
up like newspapers at the bottom of a cardboard box
in his shop.
But,
if you are one to frequent fish and duck shows, tournaments,
or art shows on the east coast between the Florida Keys
and New Jersey, you just might see Charlie peddling
his wares.
In
the gallery pages that follow, we'll show you many of
Charlie's different designs and creations. You'll also
find special pieces in the limited editions area. These
pieces will only be around for a short time.
Charlie's
creations range from tabletop sculptures, lamps and
tournament trophies to accent pieces for luxury sport
fishing boats. He
carves many different kinds of fish such as tuna, black,
white, blue, and striped marlin, sailfish, dolphin,
and wahoo. And every once in a while you might see a
duck or two pop up as limited editions.
If
you don't see what you are looking for send
us an email. While special requests are not the
practice or the norm, we will entertain every idea and
suggestion. And please, feel free to let us know what
you think about the carvings and the website.
